I want to tell y’all a story about supporting and loving your partner, starring my amazing wife.

I’ve mentioned before that I had an eating disorder for many years, and though I consider myself “recovered” there are aspects of my disorder that I still struggle with today — being quite a bit heavier than my wife is one of them.

When my wife and I moved in together back when we were still girlfriends, I was at my skinniest. She used to pick me up all the time and lift me off the ground, and I’d laugh and kick out my legs ‘cause I was just delighted to have her holding me.

But I started gaining weight as I went through recovery, and where once we were pretty close in size, I began to get bigger. And bigger. And bigger. And she remained her naturally petite self. I began to almost dread when she’d try to pick me up, sure that this time she wouldn’t be able to get me off the ground.

But every time, even if I protested, she’d lift me up and say something like: “See, you’re not so big that I can’t lift you!”

And one time I just blurted out: “But someday I’m going to be so fat you won’t be able to.”

She looked me dead in the eye and said: “No you won’t. Because if that ever happens, I’ll start working out.”

It was the best possible thing she could have said to me, because she wasn’t saying I wasn’t going to get fat — neither of us knew that for sure. She was just saying that I was never going to be “too fat” for her.

And every time I worry about getting bigger, I remember that I’ll never be so big that she can’t lift me, because baby knows how much I love being held, and she’ll change her own habits to ensure that I never feel “too big” or “too heavy” because in her eyes I’ll never be “too” anything.

Anyway, there’s a moral to this story: Find yourself a partner who will never consider you an excess. You should never be “too much” to someone who loves you — too big, too loud, too passionate, too awkward, whatever your “too” happens to be. And even as you change and grow (in my case, literally), the right person will be there through the changes, to tell you that you’re always just right for them.

“I don’t like kids” means I don’t feel a particular affinity to children in a society that CONSTANTLY pushes the ideas of motherhood and maternity at me, trying to elicit socially appropriate responses from me regardless of how I feel about the situation. It means I don’t want the incredible responsibilities associated with child care and I do not desire to spend time with children.

But I will not tolerate abuse of children. Hitting, insulting, yelling and being dismissive of the needs of children are all forms of abusive and callous behaviour.

You don’t get to disrespect and abuse people just because they haven’t learned how to stand up to you and children at least deserve your basic fucking respect.

I may not love children, but if you treat children badly then I fucking hate you.

I live in a state where you “have to” report anyone you suspect of being undocumented (that wonderful hellhole of Arizona). Now in practice this law has fallen far short, thank goodness. But if you live in such a place and they start enforcing it, here is how you get around it:

Assume everyone who doesn’t speak English is visiting.

Never ask about their job, because if they tell you they work here then you know they’re not visiting. You see them a lot for several weeks or months? Hm. Someone in the family must be ill. That’s terribly tough. They always dress in old, ratty laborers’ clothes? I feel you, my dude, I can’t afford new clothes either, and my dad has the fashion sense of an aardvark, so sometimes it’s not even about “affording” them. They say they’ve been here for years? You must have misunderstood. Spanish isn’t your first language, after all. First and last name? It never came up, or you don’t recall–you meet a lot of people.

And then, if you’re asked: no, you haven’t seen anyone residing illegally in the United States. Just people visiting.

If I were ten, or fourteen, or seventeen, and being abused by my parents, I have absolutely no idea what I would do. I don’t just mean ‘because I’d be ten and an abuse victim and not able to figure out which options I had’ I also mean ‘if I with all my current knowledge and abilities had the legal status of a ten year old, and I was being abused, I have absolutely no idea what I would do.’

We have advice for people in abusive relationships. You get out. It’s really important. Abuse warps your ability to recognize abuse and to accomplish things and to build a support network for yourself; it often feels safer to stay, but it rarely is. We have a safety net, however patched together, intended to help you run and give you somewhere to land.

If you are not yet eighteen, our society is not set up to let you do that. In many places it is illegal without your parents’ permission. You cannot get for yourself the benefits like food stamps that you would be eligible for as an adult in the same circumstances. Hotels will not rent a room to you and landlords will not sign a lease with you. Without lots of interaction with a complex state process that is terrifying, unpredictable and can make things way worse, you cannot set your own medical power of attorney. You cannot pick your own guardians even if they are happy to have you. You cannot redirect money of your care to a person of your choosing. You cannot hire people to assist you in life tasks you need assistance with, even if you have money.

We have no interest in giving children a way out of their living situations except by surrendering themselves to different authority figures they have even less reason to trust.

I think the most important project of children’s rights is changing that. I want to make it legal to run away from home, legal to stay with any adult who you choose (and to access resources that will help that adult support you if they can’t afford to provide you with a safe environment), legal to access benefits in your own name, legal to change your power of attorney, legal to change your name and get a restraining order and get a bank account. I want kids to be able to access medical care independently. I want domestic violence shelters for children that categorically promise never to send you back unless you decide to go back yourself. I want kids who’d like to work full-time to get to meet with a social worker who will approve that if it’s actually their best option instead of dithering about how we should pretend they have better ones. Well, I want a UBI for kids but until we get that I want to stop forcing them to only take jobs where their employers are willing to break the law.

It’s going to take a lot more than that, but it’s going to have to include this. And the way things are now is a horrifying wrong.

There actually *are* youth shelters for kids. Y2Y and Bridge Over Troubled Waters are two I know are in walking distance of me. They don’t return them, they do provide housing and access to services. They aren’t the only ones.

I agree with the whole arc of this post! But I worry that the framing suggests to kids in this position that these options don’t exist. They do!
